Heavy Horse and Foal

This sculpture is a statement about the heavy horse – how much it is part of our heritage – long before the Industrial Revolution when machines took over on the farms, railways and canals. It is also a statement about mother love in the animal world.

Elephant Family

On one side of the stone is the matriarch and on the other the patriarch and baby. This much-loved endangered species is a subject that Rae has addressed seven times in his sculpture. To see a video about this work scroll down.

The stone is of great geological interest being a patchwork of pink and grey granite dated 470 million years old from Corrennie Quarry in Aberdeenshire.

Wild Boar

Rae was motivated to carve this sculpture having seen wild boars in the forests of Germany. Wild boars also roamed Britain in ancient times and are found incised on Pictish stones. The image of the Wild Boar in Celtic art symbolised hospitality and feasting as well as hunting. Rae worked on the sculpture during a very wet winter, literally slipping and sliding in the mud whilst carving it – and grunting – just like a wild boar! Perhaps this is why the sculpture is the very essence of a wild boar.

It is a well-loved sculpture – when on exhibition at Newby Hall, children left apple cores at its snout.

This emotive work depicts St. Francis lying in retreat on “that rugged rock twixt Tiber and Arno” as Dante described La Verna. The sculpture shows the saint surrounded by the birds that he loved and preached to. Brother Wolf is carved on the other side of the stone. Legend has it that St. Francis saved the village of Gubbio from being ravished of its flocks by persuading the people to feed the fierce hungry wolf. In return for this kindness the wolf became a friend to everyone and a follower of St. Francis and thereafter called Brother Wolf.

It has been written that on this mountainside St. Francis took on the stigmata – the wounds of Christ. In the sculpture Rae has given Brother Wolf the stigmata. The St. Francis stone from Tillyfourie in Aberdeenshire is of great geological interest being a mix of pink and silver-grey granite and dark grey basalt.

Man of Sorrows

Carved in a fine-textured Portuguese granite this sculpture portrays the suffering of Christ. All of Rae’s earliest sculptures were inspired by religious themes. This emotive work is carved to a smooth finish which adds to serenity of the sad curled figure.

Boy with Calf

A most poetic and dynamic work of a boy leaning over a calf. On the other side of the stone he pulls a blanket up to his face, perhaps in remorse for the past. Rae does not plan his sculptures – he just carves what is within each stone. He always says it is a mystery.

Carved in Creetown silver-grey granite which is 391 million years old.

Flight into Egypt

This sculpture is titled after the Holy Family showing Mary holding baby Jesus with Joseph at the other side of the stone. It is also a metaphor for all families who are dispossessed today. A mother tenderly holds her child in her arms while the father at the other side of the stone protects them. His naked torso depicts their vulnerability.

Sheep on a Crag

This sculpture reveals three sheep within the stone. On one side the head of a ram with a curled horn. On the other side the ewe looks back at her lamb which is depicted only by its body and legs nuzzling into her side – rugged granite and sheep the epitome of Scotland.

The sculpture was inspired by the poem by Robert Burns “Ca’ the Yowes” and this was its working title.

Tyger Tyger

Carved in Corrennie pink granite which is 460 million years old, this monumental relief draws attention to the tiger as an endangered species and celebrates William Blake’s well known poem.

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

The stone for this sculpture was an amazing find in the quarry. At 22 feet long it was the largest stone to date that Rae had tackled. When the tiger emerged out of the stone he decided it was well worth the effort.
